What is the Before and After Story?
The Before and After Story is one of the most persuasive content structures available to creators and businesses. It works because humans are wired to respond to transformation. We want to see change — we want proof that things can get better. This framework gives you a clear, emotionally resonant way to show that.
Whether you are sharing a client result, a personal journey, or a product transformation, this 7-slide structure takes your audience from where someone started to where they ended up — and makes them believe they can get there too.
Best for
Instagram carousels, LinkedIn posts, brand storytelling, client case studies, testimonials
Use when
You want to show a transformation and prove the value of what you offer.
The 7 Slides
- Hook — An eye-catching hook related to the transformation. Hint at the result without giving it away yet.
- Before State — Show the initial situation. Paint a vivid picture of where the person (or thing) started.
- Problem — Highlight the specific pain points of the before state. What was frustrating, costly, or broken?
- Solution Introduced — Introduce the solution that caused the change. Keep it brief — this is not a sales pitch, it is a story beat.
- After State — Show the result. Make it concrete and specific. Numbers, visuals, and outcomes work best here.
- Testimonial — Social proof or a quote that verifies the result. Real words from a real person are more convincing than anything you could write yourself.
- Call to Action — Tell readers how they can get similar results. Link, DM, comment — one clear action.
Tips
- The more specific your Before and After, the more believable and compelling the story. Vague transformations do not convert — specific ones do.
- If you are telling a client story, ask them for a quote in their own words for the Testimonial slide. It will always outperform a paraphrase.
- This structure also works well as a video script — not just a carousel.
