What is the Explainer Video framework?
An explainer video does exactly what the name suggests — it explains something. The challenge is doing it clearly without losing your audience halfway through. This 7-segment structure gives your video a logical flow: start with the problem, deliver the solution in layers, then wrap up with a clear next step.
It is the go-to structure for YouTube tutorials, product walkthroughs, and educational webinars because it mirrors how people naturally learn: context first, then detail, then summary.
Best for
YouTube videos, webinars, product explainers
Use when
You want to break down a complex topic clearly and keep viewers watching all the way through.
The 7 Frames
- Intro — Grab attention and state the video topic. Tell viewers exactly what they will learn and why it matters.
- Problem / Context — Contextualize the problem or question. Why does this topic matter? What goes wrong without this knowledge?
- Solution Overview — A high-level overview of the answer. Give them the big picture before diving into detail.
- Deep Dive 1 — Detailed explanation of the first key point. Go deeper on the first major component of your solution.
- Deep Dive 2 — Detailed explanation of the second key point. Continue with the next important element.
- Summary — Recap the main points. Reinforce what they learned in a clear, memorable way.
- CTA — Tell viewers what to do next: subscribe, watch another video, visit a link, or leave a comment.
Tips
- Keep your Intro under 30 seconds — do not make viewers wait to find out what the video is about.
- If your topic has more than two key points, consider splitting it into a series rather than cramming everything into one video.
- Your CTA should connect to the next logical step for the viewer, not just ask for a subscribe.
